If you are buying your first kayak there are lots of different alternatives to consider. For long tours more room is preferable to allow you to move around, stretch and change positions. If you will be doing white water kayaking a tighter fit is probably better.

5) Stability

How easily a boat stays in an upright position is known as it’s initial stability. How easily a boat tips is is referred to as it’s final stability. Boats have either initial or final stability, not both! Beginners will probably favor a boat with excellent initial stability as a boat with good final stability will seem unstable to them and they may well be anxious that it will turn over. More skilled kayakers who aren’t afraid of tipping over would prefer a kayak with good final stability. A more stable boat, although fine for beginners, is inevitably not as fast.

6) The Length of the Kayak

The boat’s length is in direct relationship to how well it will track straight ahead and more easily turn. A shorter boat will be more easily maneuvered and much easier to change direction whereas a longer kayak will track much better.

7) How Much Do Kayaks Cost?

Naturally your budget is a most important consideration in determining which kayak you will purchase. A an entry level kayak constructed from plastic will probably start at approximately $250 whereas other more advanced plastic models can be as much as $1600. Folding kayaks start from about $1350 and can be as much as $5000 for a high quality tandem kayak. Inflatable boats are much cheaper, starting at around $20. Kayaks made from composite materials are much more expensive.

It’s all about flying a kite

OK….if you’re thinking about trying it, here’s a little motivation: My kids started kiting at 6-years-old. Average kiteboarder’s age is 38 in the year 2005. In 2004, a 10-year-old kid won in the PKRA Women’s World championships. I’ve met several kiters from ages 60 to 70. A tiny Nordic girl set the first kiteboarding speed record. We kite often with a mother of 2 who is in her 50s. Basically, power kiting can be enjoyed by many and has few pre-requisites.

However, with that said, we must first reveal three facts often overlooked by new comers:

1 – Power kiting is a sport and is not for everyone! Many who show up at our door have a mis-understanding that kiteboarding is a ride and we can just take them out for an afternoon of fun. Even worse, are those who feel they only need to watch someone do it a few times before trying it. To persue this sport, there are specified training steps that you need to learn and be guided on.

2- If you’re going to crash, safety should always be the number one factor when persuing any sport, including kiteboarding. Expecting that you’re going to crash kites and fall, it is a must for one to keep a positive mental state. The best way to learn is by falling; it is the first step before being able to get on your feet. Keep your learning aptitude strong and you’ll do well

3- Girls learn faster We’ve found women and girls have a faster learning curve than most guys. In our studies, we’ve nailed it down to finesse, center of gravity, and study skills. Overall, girls have more finesse and balance. Since kiting is more about “Zen” than strength, they do well by not muscling the gear around. The natural lower center of gravity increases their ablity to sustain rides. And when we teach them something….they listen well and absorb what was being taught (sorry guys).

Fusing your skills with other sports!
In just a few years, kite flyers, wakeboarders, surfers, skaters, skiers, snowboarders, sailors and paragliders have fused in their skills with kiteboarding. If in your athletic background you possess some of these skills, you’ll soon find out that kiteboarding offers a lot of skill familiarity as well as learning a few tricks. Here’s a few tips for those crossing over from:

wind sports: Windsurfers and sailors will love that they have a big sail on a small boat. Smaller gear size will have you stoked about transport and rigging. Your key strength is your wind knowledge. You will likely have the need to unlearn riding big boards and holding on to booms.

Boarders: Surfers will love riding more waves in one kiting session than entire season surfing. Wakeboarders will love the hangtime as they control their own boat with an 80′ pole. Snowboarders or skiers will add fuel to that they already have their board, ride up mountains and avoid lift lines (plus you can ride in summers on ground or water). Skaters will eat up the sliders, wakeskates and rails, falling from an ollie won’t tear up any joints. All boarder types will need to really work on the wind basics along with kite control skills and launching.

There is no need to have a background in any of these sports. Often, we find students who have no strong board experience have a lot less to unlearn. Pro-riders often have stronger learning aptitudes and the desire to push forward. Some of these professional kiters have never stepped foot on a board or boat. It really comes down to passion, desire and commitment levels.
