This workout is no joke, and it improved my cardio/conditioning in my martial arts training almost immediately. The Pit Master is hilarious, but I still hate him for putting me through these TOUGH workouts!!!

Firstly, thanks to Mr. Hacklemann for this DVD. It has brought in a much needed variety to my workout. The fact that he works out throughout the DVD adds credo to the contents of the DVD. Here is a brief description –

DVD has 3 workouts- upper body, lower body and combo. The last one is without any equipment. The workout trains in both the aerobic and anaerobic ranges. It has plents of explosive power exercises and well as lactic tolerance exercises. there is a bonus section at the end dealing with hand wraps, punch and kick techniques which is useful.

I thought i was in good shape but i guess its relative! i was winded the first 15 minutes into workout #3 (without equipment). the blackjacks are phenomenal at building power and burning the cellulite. also i like that he trains for anaerobic situations as well.

outstanding workouts and a great value for the price. Highly recommended!

Great workout video.. and I’ve tried a few. This is *exactly* what I’ve been looking for. A MMA/Kickboxing/MA workout–and not the “marie” ones that punch & kick the air and have all these complicated 8+ count flailing around moves that do nothing more than hypnotize your potential opponent–as long as you don’t get tied up in a pretzel knot first. These old-school workouts will inspire you and kick your a**.

I also love John “The Pitmaster” Hackleman’s style of leading the workout. Very realistic, well thought out, well put together, executed, etc. He’s also got a wicked sense of humour. I kept laughing at his comments; “Okay almost done.. only 19 more sets to go..” and “oops, I lost count again. I always do that..”, “19..19..19..19..” Seriously cracked me up. And John, no, burpees aren’t *my* favorite. :-D

He’s also the “real deal” advanced martial artist (10 Dan) as well–which is a huge plus for me. There’s so many clowns out there that try to teach [M]MA and generally their techniques not only suck, but will injure you as well. I also respect his association with Chuck Liddell and the other MMA fighters from his “Pit”. Def a genuine group of guys (and gals).

Yes it’s sure not a TKD or Tai-Chi workout. Can’t say I’ve ever done Tae Bo, so I can’t compare. Can’t say it appeals to me. Maybe it’s the tights. And you know how that eyeliner tends to run when you get all sweaty.. so much hassle.

This workout set is great tho. I’m afraid to even open the crosstraining one. I’ve been training as a martial artist for almost 10 years now. And this workout laid me out. The last couple years I’ve been focusing on more/harder impact work Muai Thai, Kickboxing, MMA, and these workouts fit perfectly with those disciplines.

Again, Very very very satisfied with the DVD set. If I had one regret it’s not buying the entire boxed set initially. But overall very very happy with this purchase. Best workout DVD I’ve ever purchased.

Thanks John H. (and others) for producing them.

This is a great DVD. It takes very little room and gets the job done. Having said that, I think if you’re not the “athletic” type – (into sports-especially boxing or martial-arts) then this may not the type of

    workout you’re looking for.

    A Great Measure Of Fitness
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I compete in boxing, Muay Thai, and most recently mixed martial arts. When trying to add muscle and strength, a fighter must always be cautious not to sacrifice conditioning or flexibility for power. This, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to put on conditioned and functional muscle. I really didn’t anticipate this workout to be as dificult as it was, but I have had great results in a very short period of time.

Some people might find this workout a little more primitive than your modern fitness program, but old tricks are usually the best tricks. I would definitely recommend this dvd to anyone who is seriously considering combat sports. This program is definitely NOT for the faint of heart; it’s a serious and strenuous workout that will [...], regardless of your fitness level.

This is an excellent workout for boosting cardio endurance! This is not an easy workout by any means. You should expect to push your limits and over exceed your own expectations. I recommend this for anybody who trains in any martial arts and/or kickboxing. I love this workout, and so will you!!!

Amazing Workout – Never Gets Old & Is Fun
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
A little over 2 years ago I was inspired to get into the best shape of my life. My wife and I just had a kid a year before, I lost my motivation (loss of sleep and the total change in ones life that comes with having a child) and had only been working out once a week tops (lifting weights)for a few months. This was after taking a 9 month break of doing no excercise at all before getting this video. What really made me think I need to start doing cardio was the fact that I got caught in a rip current that summer and when I almost instantly got winded trying to help another swimmer stay calm get back to shroe….. it really inspired me to workout. At 30, I was in the worst shape I had been since I was in my mid teens and something had to change. I didn’t feel good about myself and my fitness level.

Being into the UFC, this workout sounded really interesting to me. It combined strength training with cardio – win win as far as I could see! Money was tight so I knew actually doing MMA was out of the picture at the time but if nothing else, this could help me get into share for when I was ready. At first, I couldn’t stand the thought of doing a “workout video”…. seemed really (insert choice word here) to me. That being said, after reading the reviews on the Pit – it sounded different. It sounds like just want I needed and I knew I had to at least try it. I figured for $15, what did I have to lose?

The first time I did this video it killed me! My arms and legs have never been more tired or sore. I started with the total body workout (workout 3). It was way over my limits!!! I would get winded so easily (to the point I felt like I was going to collapse and I would sound like an asthmatic) and the pace was just way too fast. While it was a bit overwhelming, I stuck with it. After doing the video a few more times and getting use to it, I found that I would need to rest every other set or so…. I just couldn’t keep up. I would set goals for myself. If John Hackleman did 20 push ups, I would do 10… stuff like that. The next time I might do 11. I could steadily see improvements in my fitness. Without changing my diet (which isn’t the best) in the first 6 months I took off 10 lbs of fat… and I wasn’t “overweight” to start! The video went from impossible to a great challenge and something I looked forward to doing. I could see the improvement in my fitness in everything I did – swimming, running… everything. It was great to have cardio. I had never run 5 k in my life and I ran it once on a treadmill before the event and then entered a 5k and did it in 26 min flat – not bad considering where I started.

Now after doing the video on average once a week for 2+ years (with lifting and some biking mixed in), I truly am in the best shape of my life! The best part is that this video NEVER gets old to me. I love workout 3! While I still cannot do the entire blackjack – I can do every other part of this disk and I am not far off from doing the full blackjack (I cannot keep up with the reps but do it for just as long as they do – that is what is great about this video is you can easily customize it for your fitness level). Where before I thought to myself there is no way I could ever do this whole video and the intensity blew me away, now it is a challenge I look forward to and is the cornerstone to me staying in shape.

Workout 1 is also killer (upper body workout) but I don’t do it too often. The kicking part really isn’t good without a bag but the rest of it is amazing. If you are not sore after this workout you are an animal! I have never tired the leg workout but never felt the need as both workout 1 and 3 hit the legs fairly well. In fact, it is the back of my legs that are usually the sorest from doing these workouts.

I could not recommend this workout video more! It never gets boring and really hits your entire body hard (except biceps). To this day it kicks my a$$! Unless you are at a ridiculous level of fitness – this video is worth a try! With some weight training thrown in, I don’t think you can go wrong. No, the production quality of the video isn’t the best but who cares. It is a good honest kick your a$$ workout. The best part is you don’t have to leave your home and the convenience factor is a huge plus too! 5 + stars – possibly the best $15 I have ever spent.

    Like a Rock!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As a big Liddell fan, I purchased the Pit Workout mainly out of curiosity to see how he trains. I remember watching it for the first time, thinking “there’s no way I could ever get through that”. After gaining 25 lbs. between doctor visits, and constant badgering from the wife to lose weight, I decided I’d try it. I spread the three workouts throughout the week, doing one every other day, mixing some light running and dumbbell exercises on the days between. Within 3 months I lost over 50 lbs., and could get through all three workouts without cheating! I can’t describe the way this workout makes me feel. The word “invincible” comes to mind. I literally feel like a rock. Every muscle in my body feels twice as strong! People are constantly asking me how I lost the weight, I always respond with two words (no, not diet + exercise) … “The Pit”.

My wife and I thank you Mr. Hackleman!

I got this DVD to break up my work outs at the gym when I had lite days with CrossFit. The 2 DVD set gives you a upper body, lower body and total body work outs along with tips on punching hand wraping and other useful information for a beginner. Each work out will run from :50 – 1hr:10min long. If you plan on doing this in the house on a rug I would buy a mat as well because you will form a pool of sweat. I think if you were to only do each work out 2-3 times a week you would still get into great shape.

You will have to have a set of MMA style gloves and hand wraps if you plan on hitting a heavy bag like they do on the upper/lower body work outs. Another item needed is a jump rope. The heavy bag and gloves are not mandatory as you can still do the work out by shadow boxing but to get the full effect I would suggest the items mentioned.

FYI this DVD is no joke! If you follow along you will have to be in above average shape just to keep up. I have seen guys try to jump into this DVD thinking it was some sort of TV informercial deal and that they were going to show everyone how hard they were and in the process only ended up puking in the waste basket and leaving the gym in shame. If you are just starting out go at your own pace and before you know it you will be yelling at the TV to pick it up and stop resting so much :)

This workout dvd is intense! The exercises and techniques shown are basic but the sheer amount they throw at you is insane (200+ push-ups 100+ sit ups 50+ burpees/sprawls..etc etc… this will get you in shape!!! optional equipment is minimal (jump rope, bag gloves, heavy bag) and the workouts will indeed break you. I pesonally pucked the first few workouts (no pain no gain!!! haha!)but have since mangaed to keep up (barely) with the workouts. I recommend this dvd to anyone wanting to get in great shape!!!

I bought this for my husband, figuring he would not be into working out with me and my Cindy Crawford DVDs – and I’m glad I did! We received it a little over a week ago and have started our second week of workouts. It is incredibly hard, but I managed to get through almost the entire upper body workout today – already improving! This DVD set will never be praised for its polished production – the workouts take place in a dingy, fluorescent-lit boxing gym, the music isn’t great – but that’s not why you buy a workout DVD anyway, is it? This is hard exercise plain and simple – lots and lots of pushups, lots of kicking, lots of shadowboxing, tons of squats, jumping rope, jumping jacks for crying out loud. It’s actually refreshing to return to the old school exercises that have been around for years, because they work. John Hackelman (I think that’s right ), the guy who leads these workouts, is surprisingly softspoken and calm. He offers none of the chitchatty, bubbly “You can do it!” drivel that is so common in other workout DVDs – he counts and that’s pretty much it. He often loses count too, “19, 19, 19, 19, 19, 20.” I’ve read other reviews saying that he offers no motivation and I can only assume it’s this aspect that they’re talking about – he doesn’t hold your hand or cheer you on. The motivation for me is looking at him and the other participants in the video – they’re in great shape, they work hard, and I’d like to be there one day too. These workouts are hard enough for me and my husband that we’ll be able to use them for quite a long time before we get so good at them that they’re no longer challenging – indeed, Hackelman is sweating and huffing and puffing throughout, so we’ve got a ways to go! And you don’t need any equipment – he shows people using punching bags and jumpropes, but also people using neither so that’s nice. I like it, my husband likes it, I say give it a try.

It was awsome! I have not felt sore like this for a while. I started with the upper body and let me tell you… when he forgets what number he is on and keeps going its funny the first time but by the end not so much. I was actually hating life about half way, until my wife wanted to join. When we were shadow boxing we hit herself in the face so that gave me enough to finish! AWESOME VIDEO!!!!!

    * I workout a lot, as much as I can, and try to make sure my training is specific to the martial arts and fighting as much as possible. That’s why I got this, and it did not really disappoint.

    * Now, I’m not really a fan of long warm-ups, which this program does have. However, once it gets started, you can definitely work up a sweat. It’s mainly body-weight training and MA punches/ kicks (often with horrible form), but it does an excellent job of getting you mentally and physically ready for most altercations. The tempo is often too slow for me, but it will get others in better shape, to be sure.

    * Add in a good football-styled workout for your impact training, plus picking up the tempo, and you’ll definitely be getting in the right kind of shape for beating off attackers.— If you can’t find a solo football impact-and-aerobics training workout you can do at home here on Amazon, contact me and I’ll send you one for free.

I respect the ice man ,and his trainer ,but this is a very confusing dvd,if you are looking for a dvd ,highlighting a mma workout and to help with your work out ,this is not it,this a low to high impact very very basic martial arts and general fitness workout ..most of you will already be doing this kind of stuff anyway and its done at a very dismal pace.. i am very disappointed ,at least some thing of the iceman working out would have been nice, insteads its some guys and girls working out …really nothing to do with mma nor thai pad work nor mma combat training …very misleading ….sad

    The Pit Delivers!!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Well I was hoping for a good workout DVD as the previous ones I’ve bought have been a little on the weak side. The Pit delivered exactly what I wanted!

You know that the workout is going to be tough when the trainer is struggling to talk and complete the workout himself, either that or he’s just not fit himself! As I found out it was not a case of him being unfit, it was a good hard workout.

I would like to get my hands on a Wavemaster XXL so I can get the best out of the DVD but the bits I can do without extra equipment will keep me going for some time before I can do them comfortably.

Those guys/girls who are looking for a high intensity workout they can do anywhere then give this DVD a crack. I mean even if you don’t find it the best for you, it’s only a few dollars to buy it so why not give it a try! If you don’t like it then you can always wrap it up and palm it off as a Christmas present to a mate ;o)

Trust me though, you won’t get rid of it in a hurry!

Just a thought, if you are interested in getting the DVD then I’d go for the boxset…. Saves dollars and you get a few extras with it.

    Cheers,

    Train Hard!

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The three workouts included in this two dvd package are extraordinarily challenging. They are comprised of basic exercises–bag drills, shadow-boxing, push-ups, free squats, sprawls, and other calisthenics–but arranged in such a way, performed at so quick a pace, and done in such high repetitions as to be simply exhausting. I suspect, though, that if you’re looking at this product, that’s what you’re looking for. I can’t imagine better routines for building aerobic and anaerobic fitness as well as muscular power and endurance. Moreover, John Hackleman–who leads the workouts and whose credibility as a trainer is immensely bolstered by the fact that he performs them along with the other participants–is an excellent task-master, both demanding and very affable.

I like it somewhat. But it just seems so poorly done. The guy doesn’t seem to put much effort into the whole thing and does nothing to push you. Everyone is doing some random deal so you could do better not watching the video since that would just distract you. Compared to the “Bas Rutten workout” which I recieved recently for my birthday, this just doesn’t cut it.

If you can provide your own motivation and see pass the faults then go ahead and knock yourself out. I enjoy the “BR Workout” much more and get a better work out to boot.

I had been looking for a good no nonsense workout and found this DVD while searching Amazon a month or two ago. The workouts are brutal…especially the Black Jack workout on disk 2. The great thing is I go at my pace and get a good workout and have A LOT of room to advance so these workouts will be around along time before I get even close to it being an workout that isn’t challenging.

I’m trying to understand the other people’s negative reviews of this Workout and I can only think they bought this DVD blindly. Yes Chuck is not in it, ever heard of Marketing? Most DVDs use a brand name to endorse it. Anyway, I have been doing this workout for the past 3 weeks. The first week, I did 3 sessions and my arms felt like they were going to fall off, I was dreading the burpies and losing my breath pretty quickly. Week 2, Got alot better and I was actually enjoying it. By week 3 I can finish the workout and feel so much stronger and more flexible and feel great. I will continue to use this Workout, but if you buy, this won’t be easy!!
